TTRS clutch upgrade (manual)

An OEM+ clutch upgrade for 6-speed manual MK7s: an Audi TT RS pressure plate with a 240 mm Sachs disc. It clamps harder than the standard clutch but keeps a factory-like pedal. This page follows the fitting guide by Deutsche Auto Parts (DAP), written by Paul Barrett, a former dealer technician.

Overview

Cars
Golf MK7 with the 6-speed manual gearbox. The guide's torque list covers the GTI, GTI Performance Pack and Golf R. Not for DSG cars.
Torque capacity
Said to hold up to 430 lb ft (about 583 Nm), more than almost any MK7 without a big turbo. Unverified
Why
Usually done when the clutch is due anyway and the owner wants more clamping force without a heavy pedal.
Key step
The TT RS pressure plate's pilot holes are smaller than the dowels on the MK7 flywheel, so they must be drilled out before it will fit.

The TT RS clutch disc does not fit the MK7. Use the 240 mm Sachs disc listed below with the TT RS pressure plate.

Removing the gearbox

  1. From above, remove the air filter box, battery and battery tray. The tray has a 10 mm nut at the back, on the lower strut tower.
  2. Disconnect the gear linkage and tie it up out of the way.
  3. Remove the starter. Unplug the reversing light switch and tuck the wiring up on the chassis rail.
  4. Raise the car onto axle stands and remove both front wheels.
  5. Remove the engine undertray and the lower left wheel arch liner sections that join the bumper.
  6. Undo the hub bolts (24 mm 12-point), then the ball joint nuts, and remove the driveshafts.
  7. Remove the right-hand inner drive flange from the gearbox, the dog-bone (torque) mount and the rubber section of the lower charge pipe.
  8. Open the slave cylinder bleed nipple and drain the clutch line.
  9. Support the engine, then remove the gearbox mount bolts and the gearbox mount bracket.
  10. Support the gearbox and remove the 8 bolts holding it to the engine. Note where each one goes.
  11. Slide the gearbox to the left, lifting the differential up into the engine bay to clear the subframe, until it is off the flywheel. Lower it out.
  12. Remove the slave cylinder from the bellhousing.
  13. Remove the 9 mm 12-point bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. Take off the old pressure plate and disc and inspect the flywheel.

Drilling the TT RS pressure plate

The pilot holes in the TT RS pressure plate are smaller than the locating dowels on the MK7 flywheel. Drill them out with the 15/64 in bit, or a stepped bit to at least 1/4 in, then offer the pressure plate up to the flywheel to check it seats on the dowels before going further.

Fitting

  1. Put the new disc on the flywheel the right way round, fit the pressure plate over it and centre the disc with the alignment tool.
  2. Fit the 6 new pressure plate bolts and torque them in a diagonal pattern (see below).
  3. Refit everything in reverse order. Stop before refitting the battery and bleed the clutch.

Torque settings

Confirm every figure against the VW workshop manual for your car's VIN. Bolts tightened to a torque plus an angle are stretch bolts and must be replaced. The guide's bolt-by-bolt lists under the mount and bellhousing figures are muddled, so check which bolt takes which figure.
