Almost everything on this page is owner-reported, from posts in the MQB Tuning and MQB Track Cars UK Facebook groups and on Instagram. None of it is confirmed by VW wiring diagrams or workshop information. Check every pin against the wiring diagram for your car before connecting anything. A gearbox that is wired or coded wrongly can leave the car immobile or damage the transmission.
VW never offered this conversion. The DQ381 replaced the DQ250 in the Golf R at the 2017 facelift1. There is no off-the-shelf kit, and TVS Engineering, a DSG specialist, does not list a DQ250 to DQ381 conversion2. One VWROC member called it almost plug and play. Others report that the engine and gearbox control units do not work together without further work Sources differ3.
The two gearboxes
Parts owners report needing
Two owners who have done or commissioned the swap give the same core list6:
| Part | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DQ381 gearbox | Needs resetting to an uncoded state ("virginising") so it can be coded to the car. See Software. | [6] |
| Passenger-side driveshaft | Reported by both owners. | [6] |
| Starter motor | Reported by both owners. | [6] |
| Flywheel and clutch | DQ381-specific. A parts listing gives the DQ381 flywheel as 06K105266AC Unverified. | [6] [7] |
| Gear selector | Named by one owner. | [6] |
| Oil cooler lines | One owner says the lines can be made to fit the existing DQ250 cooler. | [6] |
| Wiring | Re-pinned gearbox plug and extra wiring for the auxiliary oil pump. See Wiring. | [6] |
| Front subframe | See Subframe. | [8] |
Not mentioned by any owner, and not confirmed either way: changes to the bevel box, propshaft or gearbox mounts on a 4MOTION car Unverified. A 7-speed-specific pendulum mount insert is sold by at least one tuner, which suggests the mount may differ Unverified7.
Subframe
One owner fitted the aluminium front subframe 3Q0 199 369 E for their DQ381 conversion. Another owner reports that the 3Q0 199 369 subframe is the later revision, with clearance for larger gearboxes such as the DQ381, and that the earlier one is 5Q0 199 3698.
- The same owner found 3Q0 199 369 E on a Passat B8, and quotes 8.6 kg for the aluminium subframe against 12.4 kg for a steel one8.
- For manual cars, that owner says either version fits8.
- Whether a MK7 Golf R already has the aluminium subframe, and whether the change is strictly needed for the DQ381, is not confirmed Unverified. Check the part number on your car.
Subframe bolt torques are on the part numbers and torque page. They are stretch bolts, to be replaced.
Wiring
The DQ381's gearbox control unit plug is laid out differently from the DQ250's, so the car-side connector has to be re-pinned6. One owner also reports wiring at the back of the gearbox for the auxiliary oil pump6.
Gearbox control unit plug, as posted by owners
This pinout was posted for the DQ500 and stated to be the same for the DQ381 Unverified9:
| Gearbox plug pin | Function | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | +12 V, permanent | [9] |
| 16 | Ground | [9] |
| 15 | Ignition (switched +12 V) | [9] |
| 6 | CAN high | [9] |
| 7 | CAN low | [9] |
| 2 | To engine ECU pin T91/60 | [9] |
| 4 | To engine ECU pin T91/41 | [9] |
Another owner lists the signals as CAN high and low, a neutral or selector switch, permanent positive, ground and switched positive6. What the two engine ECU lines carry is not stated.
Software and coding
- Reset the gearbox. A used DQ381 has to be virginised, returned to an uncoded state, before it can be coded to the car6.
- Component protection. Owners report removing it through ODIS, VW's online dealer tool6. See electronics for how component protection works.
- Engine and gearbox software. Owners report the engine ECU and gearbox control unit may not work together as delivered: rpm flare on selector changes and 4,000 rpm in neutral, needing ECU work3. One owner suggests a gearbox reflash, and taking the gear-ratio data from a GTI file into an R file to avoid gears disengaging Unverified6. This is tuner-level work.
After fitting, the DQ381 oil level must be set at a specific temperature with a scan tool. Details are on the servicing page.
Who does it
At least one owner had a UK tuning specialist fit the gearbox after sourcing the parts themselves6. Given the software work involved, a specialist with DSG and ECU experience is the realistic route for most owners.
