MK7.5 LED headlights on a MK7

What it takes to run genuine VW MK7.5 LED headlights on a MK7, with a pre-facelift Golf R with bi-xenon AFS and DCC as the main case: the lamps, the extra control modules, the BCM question, the wiring, the coding and the faults owners have hit.

Read this first

This is an owner-level guide built from forum write-ups, owners' coding backups and a small number of VW documents. It is not VW or Audi documentation. Wire numbers, pin numbers and coding values differ between cars, markets and model years. Check every pin against the wiring diagram for your own car before you cut, splice or re-pin anything. Headlamps that are wired, coded or aimed wrongly can dazzle other drivers and fail the MOT.

Much of the step-by-step detail comes from a guide written by AWD4416 on golfmk7.com, with later corrections from the same thread1. That guide was written for a 2019 US GTI that was already a MK7.5 with halogen lamps, so it is a halogen to LED conversion on a facelift car, not a pre-facelift conversion1. Its wiring (a 10-pin halogen plug re-pinned to the 14-pin LED plug, a new rear level sensor and new fuses) does not map one-to-one onto a pre-facelift bi-xenon Golf R. Where the guide and later evidence disagree, this page follows the later evidence and says so.

The guide's author called it a very demanding retrofit and said to plan at least a full day for the hardware alone if working solo1. Disconnect the battery before any electrical work1.

Which cars this suits

The body is the big caveat

Genuine MK7.5 lamps are a different shape from MK7 lamps. Several owners say they need the MK7.5 wings, bumper and bonnet (and grille) as well, and one adds that the adaptive cruise radar position changed between the MK7 and MK7.52. Aftermarket "7.5-look" lamps made in the MK7 shape are a different product2. Kufatec sells its genuine LED kit only for facelift sales types (BQ1 and BV5) and says it is not for right-hand-drive cars3.

Treat a genuine MK7.5 lamp swap on a pre-facelift car as a front-end conversion. The exact list of panels and brackets is not confirmed from VW parts data Unverified, and nor is whether the radar needs to move Unverified2.

One owner in the thread converted a pre-facelift GTD with bi-xenon and AFS to the MK7.5 front and followed the guide. He had bought basic LED lamps rather than the variant the guide used, and after the work only the dipped beam worked; a scan showed the four lamp modules could not be reached1.

What a pre-facelift bi-xenon AFS Golf R already has

On a pre-facelift car the headlamp range and cornering function lives in module 55, "Headlight Range", part 7P6907357. On a facelift LED car the same function (still called J745) moves to module 4B, "Multifunction module", part 3Q09073384. A pre-facelift AFS car has no 4B module; a scan will confirm it1.

A retrofitter listed the parts of a Golf R bi-xenon AFS set5:

Lamp variants

The headlamp PR code series is 8I followed by a letter, shown on the car's data sticker1. Three LED lamps exist1:

PR codeWhat it isModules per lampSource
8ITBasic LED. One daytime "L" lit, static.One (D6 or D7, 7P5941591A)[1] [6]
8IXLED with dynamic cornering. Both "L"s lit. US versions add amber side reflectors. Two (29 or 39, plus D6 or D7)[1] [9]
8IUFull dynamic light assist (matrix-style dipped and main beam). Needs the front camera for the dynamic functions.Two[1]

Owners confirm the count: lamps with two daytime "L"s carry two modules each, and the single-"L" lamp carries one1. Only 8IU gives full dynamic light assist1. An 8IU lamp without the A5 camera still works as AFS, but light assist and main-beam masking need the camera1. Going from 8IX to 8IU means the whole lamp assembly changes1.

VW's equipment codes seen in coding threads: PXA has one daytime "L"; PXB has two plus dynamic cornering; PXC is like PXB with two dipped beams. Module 4B is fitted on all three10. A factory PXA car in a full ODIS backup also has a 4B6.

Part numbers

An ETKA list posted in the thread uses the suffix to show the model: none for the standard lamp, A for GTI, B for GTE and C for Golf R1. The "x" below stands for 1 or 2 (see the next heading).

An Australian owner fitted lamps from a 2018 MK7.5 Golf R numbered 5G2941059C and 5G2941060C1. The 059/060 numbers look like earlier numbers for 077/078: the US GTI lamps in the guide went from 5GM941059A to 5GM941077A (left) and from 5GM941060A to 5GM941078A (right)1. The same supersession for the C-suffix R lamps is not confirmed Unverified.

VW numbers left-hand parts odd and right-hand parts even: 059 is left and 060 is right. The owner notes this page drew on have them the other way round.

5G1 or 5G2

The two prefixes are for different traffic sides, and the evidence on which is which conflicts Sources differ:

  • The ETKA table posted in 2020 labels 5G1 "RHD" and 5G2 "LHD"1.
  • Dutch owners (driving on the right) had 5G1941035/036 and 5G1941081/082, and the Australian right-hand-drive Golf R had 5G21.
  • A 2026 reply with an ETKA screenshot says 5G1 is for right-hand traffic and 5G2 for left-hand traffic, and that the labels mean traffic side, not steering side1.

The weight of evidence is that 5G2 is the left-hand-traffic lamp that a UK car needs Unverified. Check the part against ETKA for your VIN, and check the dipped-beam cut-off, before buying.

Ready-made kit

Kufatec's kit 42100 comes in Standard, GTI and R versions at €3,000. It gives LED daytime running lights, all-weather light, motorway light and static cornering light; variable light distribution needs the front camera (PR code QK1)3. It is sold for facelift cars only and not for right-hand drive3.

The guide's author says every VW with LED headlamps uses the same 4B module and that what matters is the parameter set loaded into it1. The lamp modules are programmed through the 4B, so used modules from another car need the right firmware and parameters loaded1. See Firmware and parameters.

BCM and gateway

Which BCM

Pre-facelift BCMs are 5Q0937086/087 ("PQ37BOSCH") and are long-coded. Facelift BCMs are 5Q0937084/085 ("BCM MQBAB") and are set through adaptation channels only7. The part in the owner notes, 5Q0937084CP, was not found on any factory car in the research. Factory LED cars were seen with 5Q0937084CF6 and 5Q0937085BN9.

A later pre-facelift car may already have the newer BCM: the 2017 pre-facelift GTD in the thread had a 5Q0937084CL, "BCM MQBAB H"1. An experienced member of the thread says the 09 module was reprogrammed in about mid-2016, when its long coding moved into adaptation channels1. Scan your own BCM first.

Factory LED cars run the facelift BCM with Aussenlicht_uebergreifend set to Light_Control_Module = installed, LCM_blinker = false and the dipped-beam channels on load type "5 - LED Abblendlicht"6,9,10.

Is a BCM swap needed?

Probably, on a long-coded pre-facelift BCM:

  • A VWROC owner with genuine LED lamps fitted to his MK7 found no LED options to code and asked whether a MK7.5 BCM was needed. The thread did not settle it13.
  • Kufatec says its bi-xenon and LED range-control set needs the central electrics unit replaced, with its highline BCM 39907 at €319, and the gateway checked for highline spec14,15.
  • A pre-facelift owner fitting AFS did fit a MK7.5 BCM, taken from a 2018 GTI16.
  • A facelift BCM in a pre-facelift car can work, but owners report key pairing trouble (315 MHz against 433 MHz), and door, washer and "energy" faults7,16.

Whether any pre-facelift BCM offers Light_Control_Module or the LED load types is not known Unverified. Check an adaptation map of the car's own BCM before buying one.

On one pre-facelift car with a long-coded BCM, an experienced thread member said the headlamp-type switches are in BCM long-coding byte 02, bits 0–2, but did not know the value for 8IU lamps. The two trial values he suggested did not clear the owner's faults: one added a data bus fault and the other left the faults as they were Unverified1.

Gateway

Some early gateways, such as 5Q0907530S, lack pins 7 and 17 (extended CAN). Retrofitters needed 5Q0907530AM, 5Q0907530AC or 3Q0907530C12,5. A factory AFS Golf R uses those pins for its module 55, so they should already be there12. A replacement gateway brings component protection, removed online by a dealer or an online service12,5.

Wiring

The guide's author warned that the official wiring diagram for this area is poor and that a MK7.5 shop manual was more useful1. Build your own pin map from the diagrams for your car before cutting anything, and check every wire with a multimeter1.

Gateway J533, connector T20e

The pin table from the VW repair manual, as reproduced for the gateway17:

PinSignalPinSignalSource

8Running gear sensor CAN low18Running gear sensor CAN high[17]
9Diagnostic CAN low19Diagnostic CAN high[17]
10Infotainment CAN low20Infotainment CAN high[17]

The guide connects the 4B to gateway pins 5 and 15 (convenience CAN) and 7 and 17 (extended CAN) with a Y-cable: the original gateway wires go into a junction plug made from the old AFS harness, and new wires run from it to both the gateway and the 4B1,17. On a factory car the 4B appears twice in the gateway installation list, which fits a module on two buses6. Which 4B pins take which pair is only shown in the guide's photos Unverified. The owner notes give CAN colours in VW's usual pattern (orange with a second colour), but not confirmed per pin Unverified.

On a pre-facelift AFS car, module 55 sits on extended CAN only: gateway pin 7 (low) to the module's pin 3, and gateway pin 17 (high) to its pin 212. VW's training manual shows the AFS lamp CAN as its own sub-bus under extended CAN, reached through J745, with the lamp power modules on it8.

From the guide's corrected table, for a car that had halogen lamps1. The BCM pins match the lighting channel names on factory LED cars, which cross-checks the table6,9.

  • On UK and European cars T73a/72 is the rear fog lamp channel (Leuchte26 NSL). Do not connect pin 13 to it1. On US cars that channel drives the amber side markers1.
  • Going from an 8IT to an 8IU lamp on a European car, owners found the only wiring change was linking pin 4 to pin 81.
  • LED lamps are driven over the lamp CAN, not wired straight to the bulbs like halogens. Internally the dipped beam still works without CAN, which is why "only the dipped beam works" is a common first result1.
  • 10-pin to 14-pin adapters sold for MK7.5 halogen to LED swaps are wired wrongly for genuine LED lamps unless re-pinned1.

What the pre-facelift bi-xenon side already has

  • The lamp plug is 14-pin on bi-xenon cars and 10-pin on halogen cars2.
  • Lamp pins 1 and 2 carry the AFS lamp CAN from module 5516. On the module 55 plug the lamp CAN pins are 4 (orange/grey) and 5 (orange/brown)12.
  • Headlamp +12 V comes from fuses SC36 and SC3712, the same fuses the guide uses for the LED lamps1.
  • The bi-xenon shutters are driven from BCM T46b/22 (right) and T46b/23 (left)12,5. On a factory LED car the matching channels (Leuchte10/11 "SHUTTER LB23/RB22") are set to load type 0, not driven6. They must be switched off on a converted Golf R (see 09 coding).

A full pre-facelift bi-xenon 14-pin pinout and a pin-by-pin map to the LED plug were not found Unverified. Build it from the diagrams for both cars before cutting wires.

Power, grounds and fuses

Lamp fusesNew 5 A mini fuses in SC36 (right) and SC37 (left)A bi-xenon retrofitter used 10 A micro fuses. The correct LED rating is not confirmed Unverified.[1] [12]

Getting new wires into the interior fuse carrier is hard. The guide's author removed three bolts and released three clips so the carrier could move forward far enough to open the purple locking lever from the front; forcing it unseen broke one1. Another bi-xenon retrofitter gave up after a day and used fuse jumpers1.

The rear level sensor is not needed with DCC

The owner notes list three wires, to BCM T73a/23, T73a/22 and T73c/57, as if they were part of the 4B wiring. They are not. In the guide they connect the rear level sensor (sensor pins 1, 3 and 4) to the BCM on a car without DCC1.

With DCC, the damper control unit J250 supplies the body height to the range control over CAN and the rear tilt sensor is deleted8. DCC cars have two level senders on J25016. On LED cars without DCC the single sender goes to the BCM; on gas-discharge cars it goes to module 5516. The guide's author later fitted DCC to his own car, moved the rear sensor to the DCC module and recoded the 4B to take height from it1. A DCC Golf R needs none of the three sensor wires.

For a non-DCC car, the guide fits the sensor on the rear left, runs the harness in conduit over the top of the subframe and through the wheel-arch grommet (sealed afterwards), and joins it at the BCM behind the bonnet-release panel1. One owner found a ready-made harness pinned wrongly in the 4-pin sensor plug1.

Ready-made harnesses

The guide used a generic MK7 xenon AFS harness bought online and had to rework it heavily; there was no LED-specific one1. Kufatec sells an automatic range control set, 39934, with variants including one for "LED, cornering light, electr. damper control", at €314–47114. No Kufatec pre-facelift to MK7.5 LED adapter was found.

Fitting the lamps and the 4B

  1. Disconnect the battery1.
  2. Remove the rubber strip and two clips from the scuttle panel cover, lift it off and route each lamp harness into the cabin through the bulkhead grommet1.
  3. Remove the two grille screws and pull the grille. This takes the radar out with it: unplug it. The guide's author found no radar problems afterwards when it was removed with the battery disconnected and refitted properly1.
  4. Remove the screws in the wheel arch, the screw behind the bumper and the lamp bolts, including the metal bar. Loosening a few bumper fixings after the grille is off gives room to slide the lamps out1.
  5. Re-pin the lamp plugs (see Wiring), reusing the rubber seal. Tape off and tie back unused wires. Check every wire with a multimeter1.
  6. Fit the new lamps and reverse the removal.
  7. Reach the BCM and fuse box by removing the glovebox area trim. Mount the 4B behind the BCM; the guide used hook-and-loop tape1.

The guide's tip to outline the old lamps with tape for a flush fit only applies to a car that was already a MK7.51. Tools the guide lists: terminal release tools, trim tools, a soldering iron, heat shrink, harness tape for the engine bay and the cabin, Torx bits (T30 and T40), a VAG connector release tool and a diagnostic tool; VCP or ODIS for firmware1.

Coding

Save a full backup of every module you touch before changing anything. Do not copy another car's long-coding string: use the labelled fields and your own car's values.

Order of work

  1. 19 gateway: installation list and AFS function.
  2. 09 BCM: at least the LED lamp supply and the AFS and main-beam settings. An experienced member of the thread recommends doing these before or with the 4B, not last, because the BCM is not designed to drive two headlamp types at once1. One owner who saw the same lamp-module faults as another traced them to the Leuchte6–9 settings in 09, which make the BCM supply the lamps1. One owner switched the lights off at the rotary switch before coding 091.
  3. 4B: long coding and adaptations.
  4. Clear faults on 29, 39, D6 and D7, then on 4B. The basic-settings fault on 4B will remain1.
  5. Basic settings and aim (see Basic settings and aim).

A lingering basic-settings fault usually means the lamp modules were not cleared first1. If the 4B reports a "Dynamic cornering light" fault: recheck coding and adaptations, reset the module, clear faults and run basic settings again1.

The factory DCC Golf R's 4B shows both a front and a rear level value in live data9. Mismatched height settings break basic settings: a pre-facelift module 55 taken from a DCC car expected height over CAN, and basic settings failed with "conditions not correct" until it was recoded16.

Dynamic Light Assist (8IU with GLW/MDF) cannot be combined with plain High Beam Assist1.

The guide's author logged the light distribution and found each mode needs the speed held for a while: city light below about 32 km/h (20 mph) or when turning, country light as the default, motorway light above about 113 km/h (70 mph), and junction light with dynamic cornering or with the fog lamps when turning1.

Basic settings and aim

  1. Car level, unladen and settled4.
  2. 4B, basic settings, IDE03675 "Basic headlamp setting": Go. The routine runs4.
  3. Aim each lamp with its adjusters against a screen, then stop the routine4.
  4. 4B, basic settings, IDE03676 "Acknowledge basic setting": Go4.
  5. Clear faults. No security access is needed4.

Basic settings then acknowledgement is required after any change to the 4B long coding1. The UK MOT checks aim against the dipped-beam cut-off, so a garage beam setter is the practical route; one retrofitter had his lamps levelled at a garage19,1. There is no separate main-beam height adjustment: main beam lifts a little when flashed, and it follows the basic-settings calibration1.

Firmware and parameters

Used lamp modules and 4B modules need firmware and a parameter set (also called a dataset) that match each other and the lamps. The guide says these can only be loaded with VCP or ODIS1. An experienced thread member explains that the same module and software number serve many VAG models, and the dataset tailors it to brand, model and year1. VCP files are tied to the dongle1.

  • Order that worked for owners: flash the 4B first (slow), then the lamp modules, then load parameters. The lamp modules can be re-flashed repeatedly1.
  • File names used in the thread: 7P5941572A_golfE_D#_[left/right]_8IX_standard and Golf_8v0907399d_LED_MXB_LCM[left/right]. 8IU equivalents: 8V0907399D_8IU_STANDARD_LCM_29/39 and 7P5941572A_…_8IU_STANDARD1.
  • The "head lamp variant" live data on 29, 39, D6 and D7 (values such as e052, e076, e077) must match the 4B's parameter set1.
  • After a flash, faults that come back after clearing mean the wrong firmware for those lamps1.
  • One owner bought 29/39 and D6/D7 separately and found they worked left and right without flashing; he flashed them anyway1.
  • Updating a 4B from 0286 to 0367 wiped its coding and adaptations1.

Dataset fix: an owner with no indicators or daytime lights, but working dipped and main beam, found the used 4B carried the wrong dataset. He wrote a dataset meant for 3Q0907338E onto his 3Q0907338C with ODIS-E. ODIS showed an error at the end, but the indicators and daytime lights then worked1.

Kufatec's dongle 43936 (€500) parameterises D6/D7 (7P5941572A/AG) and 29/39 (8V0907399D). The light switch must be off, and it is only for use with a matching automatic range control retrofit11. Kufatec's xenon and LED coding dongle 40084 costs €80–18020. Kufatec dongles lock to the first car they are used on3,11.

Owners without their own tools used remote coders1. A remote service named in the owner notes, service-geko.com, no longer resolves; the only archived page is a parked domain21.

Common faults and fixes

Only the dipped beam worksLamp CAN not working (the dipped beam runs without it), wrong lamp type, or the BCM not coded for LED lamps[1]
29, 39, D6, D7 "cannot be reached"Lamp CAN wiring or polarity. Check the CAN wires and the supply pins.[1]
No indicators or daytime lights; dipped and main beam fineWrong 4B dataset or parameters. Fixed by writing the correct dataset.[1]

Supply voltage low and terminal 15 implausible on 29/39, which also blocks flashingCheck the feed on lamp pins 4 and 8 and the grounds on pins 5 and 7[1]
AFS fault and open-circuit fault only while holding flash-to-pass (Dynamic Light Assist lamps)Fixed through the Leuchte values in 09[1]
Faults at the BCM, "coded incorrectly", with a long-coded BCMBCM not set up for the new lamps. See BCM and gateway.[1]

MOT and legal points

  • Converting halogen units to LED or HID bulbs is a fail. Complete replacement units built as LED are acceptable if they meet the rest of section 419.
  • Aim is checked on the dipped-beam cut-off. Lamps dipping for right-hand traffic are only acceptable with temporary masks, so a UK car needs left-traffic lamps19.
  • If self-levelling is fitted, it must work19.
  • Headlamp cleaning is inspected on vehicles first used from 1 September 2009 that have washers: washers that do not work on LED or HID lamps are a defect. The MOT does not require washers to be present19.

The construction rule that makes washers mandatory above a set dipped-beam light output (ECE R48) was not checked Unverified. The pre-facelift Golf R has washers; keep them working if the new bumper has jets. Whether the MK7.5 LED Golf R bumper has them is not confirmed Unverified.

What is still not known

  • The 4B connector pinout: which pins take convenience CAN, extended CAN, power, ground and lamp CAN.
  • The pre-facelift bi-xenon 14-pin lamp pinout, and the exact re-pin to the MK7.5 LED plug.
  • Whether a long-coded pre-facelift BCM can drive LED lamps and the lamp modules at all, and the right facelift BCM number for a UK Golf R (5Q0937084CP is unconfirmed).
  • The 4B option names on 3Q0907338 for DCC (2_sensors and DCC are taken from the guide's correction and other cars) and for a 4Motion chassis_unit.
  • ETKA confirmation of 5G1 against 5G2 by market, and of the 059C/060C to 077C/078C supersession.
  • The panel list for a genuine MK7.5 front on a pre-facelift car, and whether the radar moves.
  • The ECE R48 washer rule, harness prices, and a Kufatec connection diagram for this conversion.
