The MK7 and MK7.5 Golf GTI in detail: GTI, GTI Performance, Clubsport, Clubsport Edition 40, Clubsport S, TCR and the US trims including the Rabbit Edition. Engines, gearboxes, the VAQ front differential lock, chassis, wheels, prices by year, and the issues and recalls that apply to the GTI.

Overview

The MK7 GTI was shown at Geneva in March 2013. It was the first GTI with two factory power levels: the GTI at 220 PS and the GTI Performance at 230 PS.¹ VW dates the series from spring 2013 to 2019. The Clubsport arrived in 2016, the model update (MK7.5) in 2017, and the GTI TCR closed the series in 2019.²

Every GTI in this generation uses the 1,984 cc EA888 Gen3 turbo petrol engine. The Performance models add the VAQ electronically controlled front differential lock and larger brakes.³

Production volumes

GTI (all generations): "well over 2 million" by 2016,⁴ more than 2.2 million by May 2018,⁵ and nearly 2.3 million over seven generations by January 2019.⁶
About 6 million MK7 Golfs of all types were built.⁷ A production figure for the MK7 GTI alone was not found. Unverified

Clubsport, Clubsport S and TCR

Clubsport and Clubsport Edition 40

The Clubsport was built for the GTI's 40th anniversary.⁸ In the UK it was sold as the Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40.⁹ A separately named "GTI 40 Years" model could not be confirmed. Unverified

The UK was offered 1,000 cars in 2016 and they sold out within weeks.⁹¹⁰
Power is 265 PS (195 kW) at 5,350–6,600 rpm. An overboost adds 10% for about 10 seconds on kick-down, giving 290 PS (213 kW) and 350 Nm. The UK text says this works in 3rd gear or higher.¹¹⁹
6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG. The DSG has launch control.⁹
Interior: Alcantara and cloth, optional bucket seats, "Honeycomb 40" trims.⁹

Clubsport S

400 built worldwide, 100 of them for Germany, numbered 001/400 to 400/400 on the centre console. Colours: Tornado Red, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl, with a black roof on the red and white cars.¹²
The UK received 150 of the 400 at GBP 33,995 RRP OTR. They sold out before the price was announced.¹³⁴¹⁰
310 PS (228 kW) permanently, at 5,800–6,500 rpm, and 380 Nm at 1,850–5,700 rpm. The changes are an ECU recalibration, a 65 mm exhaust ahead of the tailpipes (55 mm on the Clubsport) and a higher-throughput fuel pump.¹²¹³

GTI TCR

Wikipedia gives an Australian allocation of 300 cars (100 per colour) for MY20. Unverified¹⁷

The TCR concept (May 2018) was quoted at 370 Nm from 1,600 rpm and 264 km/h. The production car is 380 Nm and 250 km/h, or 260 km/h with the limiter removed.⁵¹⁸⁶

Not found: the engine code of the Clubsport S (310 PS), and the code of the GTI TCR. Bar-Tek now lists DNUC under the Audi S3 and Golf R, not the TCR. Unverified²¹

Particulate filter and WLTP

The TCR had a petrol particulate filter from launch.¹⁴¹⁵
GTI Performance WLTP figures in January 2019: 7.3–7.4 l/100 km, 165–168 g/km.⁶ Whether and when the regular GTI Performance got a particulate filter was not confirmed. Unverified
The UK 230 PS GTI had gone from the May 2020 price list.¹⁶

VW said the new 7-speed DSG would gradually replace the 6-speed on the facelift.²⁵ The February 2017 UK list still shows the GTI with the 6-speed DSG.²⁶ The manual gearbox family for the GTI was not confirmed. Unverified

VAQ front differential lock

VAQ was new for the MK7 GTI Performance. It is a multi-plate coupling between the differential cage and the right driveshaft, with the locking torque controlled electro-hydraulically.³ VW US describes it as a torque-sensing, electronically controlled limited-slip differential that can send up to 100% of torque to either wheel, worth more than 8 seconds a lap on the Nordschleife.²² The variable locking works together with ESC, EDS and XDS+.¹² The UK 2020 price list calls it a "Mechanical limited slip diff".¹⁶

XDS+, the brake-based cross differential, is standard on every GTI.²²

Steering and suspension

Progressive steering is standard on the GTI (UK 2014 list).³² It needs 2.1 turns lock to lock, against 2.76 on a regular Golf.²² The ratio varies from 9.5:1 to 14.1:1. Turning circle 10.9 m.¹⁹
Sports suspension is lowered about 15 mm (UK).³² The US says 0.6 in lower than the Golf TSI, with anti-roll bars of 24 mm front and 20 mm rear.²²

Tartan seats

The UK calls the cloth "Jacara" (Jacara Red).³³²²⁶¹⁶ VW's newsroom calls it "Clark checked fabric"² and VW US calls it "Clark Plaid".²²³⁸ The original Mk1 pattern was designed by Gunhild Liljequist.³⁹ The US SE switched from leather to Clark Plaid cloth for 2018.³⁶

The 2014 model year US GTI was the MK6, as a limited 4-door-only run.⁴⁰ The MK7 arrived for MY2015.⁴¹

2019 Rabbit Edition

A limited run placed between the S and SE. It has 18 in gloss black alloys, a black rear spoiler, LED headlights with AFS, black mirror caps, Rabbit seat tags, red-stitched mats, KESSY keyless entry, Front Assist, Blind Spot monitoring and Rear Traffic Alert. Colours: Cornflower Blue, Urano Grey, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl.³⁵ The production count was not found. Unverified

2019 US manual GTI stalling (Service Action 24FD)

2019 US manual GTIs and Jetta GLIs could stall at low speed with the clutch pressed. The cause was the intake cam advanced at idle when oil pressure was low and oil temperature was 110 °C or higher. Only engines built at Silao were affected, because of a tolerance stack-up in the oil system.⁴⁴

Fix: Service Action 24FD, an engine control unit recalibration, December 2019. Warranty extended to 31 December 2025.⁴⁴
Defect petition DP19003 was opened on 3 September 2019 and denied on 30 June 2020. It alleged 413 VINs. The subject population was 11,333 2019 manual GTI, Golf GTI and Jetta GLI cars.⁴⁴
