Track and performance

Brake pads, fluids, cooling and big-brake kits, anti-roll bars, tyres and oil for a Golf MK7 or MK7.5 used on track. Data from the MQB Track Cars owners' club, credited and linked.

Track use is at your own risk. Changes to brakes and to ESC (stability control) change how the car stops and how it recovers from a slide, on the road as well as on track. Most of the data here comes from one owners' club and is marked Unverified where no other source confirms it.

Read this first

The MQB Track Cars club covers the whole MQB platform (Golf 7 and 7.5, Leon 3, Octavia 3, S3, TT and others) and rarely separates Golf R from GTI or front-wheel drive from 4MOTION. Where it does name a variant, that is shown.1 Its engine data is for the EA888 Gen3 2.0 TSI.2

Confirm every part number against ETKA for your car's VIN, and check pad fitment for your caliper before ordering.

A few values in the club's data look wrong. They are left out or corrected below, and each one is named where it would have appeared.

The club's general brake, coding and servicing data is on the pages where it belongs:

Brake systems

The standard MQB brakes are a TRW single-piston front caliper on a 340 mm disc and a rear caliper with an electric parking brake.1 Their part numbers and torques are on the Parts and torque page, the Golf R's factory disc sizes and Performance Pack brakes are on the Golf R page, and the Brembo 4-piston front upgrade is on the Retrofits page.

AP Racing, Alcon and Revo big-brake kits

The club's pad data covers three aftermarket caliper groups: AP Racing CP9660 / YSR, AP Racing CP9665 / CP9668, and Revo and Alcon 6-piston.3 It gives no caliper part numbers, disc sizes or torques for these kits, so follow the kit maker's instructions. Pads for each are in the pad tables.

Brake cooling and heat parts

Brake pads

The standard MQB pads are low-friction road pads. A higher-friction pad stops harder but makes more heat and wears the discs faster. The heat range is the temperature band in which the compound works as intended.3 Unverified

Front-to-rear brake balance can be moved by choosing different compounds front and rear.2 Friction is the coefficient the maker quotes (often written as mu). Check fitment yourself where a pad is not listed for your caliper.3

VW's fluid specification, the change interval and the DOT class minimums are on the Servicing page. These are the fluids the club lists for track use.

The club does not give a DOT class for each fluid. pH 7 is neutral; a higher figure is more alkaline. Glycol brake fluids become more acidic as they age.

Solid against hollow

A bar's torsional stiffness rises with the fourth power of its diameter. For a hollow bar, subtract the fourth power of the bore. The club's example: a 25 mm solid bar scores 390,625 and a 25 mm bar with a 12 mm bore scores 369,889.7 Unverified That is about 5% less stiff for a lighter bar, so a small change in diameter matters far more than whether the bar is hollow.

Tyres

Factory sizes are on the model pages, for example the Golf R and GTI. Legal tread depth, road tyre life and pressures are on the Servicing page.

Width and camber

The club's figures, for the platform as a whole:8 Unverified

  • With enough camber and a lowered car, some owners run 255 or 265 mm widths and 40 or 45 profiles.
  • Some performance SUVs and saloons on the platform use 20 or 21 in rims.
  • Stay within 10 mm either side of the width recommended for the rim. An 8J rim suits 225, 235 or 245.

Left out: the club gives 235/40 R18 as a common size and 235 mm as the usual factory width. 235/40 R18 is not a Golf 7 factory size, and 235 mm is the factory width only on 19 in wheels. It also calls the rim number a circumference; it is the rim diameter in inches.8

Engine oil

VW approvals, capacity and what the grade numbers mean are on the Servicing page. Check the approval on the bottle before choosing any oil below.

Oil for track use

The club's advice:9 Unverified

  • Most MQB cars leave the factory on 5W-30.
  • Many track users run 5W-40 for more margin when hot. The club says motorsport is moving back to 5W-30, because thicker oil causes oil pump flow problems.
  • If oil temperatures run high on 5W-30, go to 5W-40. If a car has starting or oil consumption problems on 5W-40, go back to 5W-30.
  • For track use, pick an oil with ester and PAO (polyalphaolefin) base stocks.
  • Oils it lists: Fuchs Titan Race Pro S; Millers Oils Motorsport CFS (5W-40 NT); Motul 300V Competition; Motul 8100 Power; Red Line High Performance. It does not give their VW approvals, so check the bottle.

Change interval

Follow the handbook for a standard car. The club suggests about 7,000 miles for a modified road car, under 5,000 miles for a car used on track, and every 1,000 miles if you can afford it. Two track days on one oil change counts as heavy use; some owners change after every track day.9 Unverified

Track problems

SymptomLikely causeWhat to doStatusSource
Soft pedal on trackHeat from the pads passes into the calipers and boils the fluidUse a high-temperature fluid (see Brake fluid)Unverified[2]
Uneven tyre wearTrack camber and toe settings, which trade tyre life for gripWatch the inner edge (see Tyres); check alignment and cold pressures as on the Faults pageUnverified[2]
Unstable chassis on trackAlignment, brake balance or aero set up for trackSet the rear toe neutral or slightly in for stability. Toe-in costs rotation under trail braking, so drivers who do not trail-brake will probably prefer it. Move brake balance with front and rear pad compounds. A splitter or wing changes the balance and reduces the need to tune alignment and brakesUnverified[2]

A soft pedal after bleeding or from leaks, general tyre wear and handling checks, and the engine faults the club lists (misfires, coolant loss, exhaust smoke) are on the Faults page.
