Overview and timeline
The MK7 Golf R had its world premiere at the IAA Frankfurt show in September 2013 and went on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2013 as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback1. UK sales began in March 20142. The Estate (Variant) was revealed at the 2014 LA Auto Show and reached the UK in September 2015, with DSG only3.
The US got the R for model year 2015 (first quarter of 2015) as a 4-door with DSG only; a manual was added for MY20164. The US never had the 3-door or the Estate R Unverified5.
The facelift (MK7.5) was revealed in November 2016 Unverified5, and the UK facelift price list is dated 14 February 20176. On 5 July 2018 VW said every R would drop to 300 PS for WLTP, and the UK lost the 3-door and the manual, leaving the 5-door DSG only78. The UK list of 1 May 2020 still showed one R, the 5-door 7-speed DSG 300 PS, with a note that it might no longer be available9. The US R ended in August 2019 with no MY2020 car, and the MK8 replaced the range from December 2019 Unverified5.

XDS+ works on both axles, with electronic differential lock braking on all four wheels. ESC has a Sport mode and can be switched off fully1.
