Quick reference
Many of the VW bulletins below are US (Volkswagen of America) documents published through NHTSA. The fault is usually the same on UK cars, but the bulletin number, warranty cover and campaign may not apply. Warranty extensions are marked US only. Some engine, brake and handling entries use data from the MQB Track Cars owners' club, credited and linked; they are marked Unverified where no other source agrees.

Water pump and thermostat housing
- Symptoms
- Coolant level drops and a dried coolant crust forms under the intake manifold.1
- Cause
- The plastic housing warps and leaks.111
- Typical mileage
- About 80,000-120,000 km, per one tuning specialist.11
- Models
- EA888 Gen3 2.0 TSI. The VW bulletin covers 2015-19 cars.2
One owners' club describes the leak as a white crust running down the right side of the engine. It says the plastic parts can fail at any age, even when new. If the pump and housing are dry, check the hoses next; a head gasket is the last thing to suspect and rare on this engine.15 Unverified
VW bulletin
VWoA TSB 19 19 99 (2052657/3, 3 Oct 2019) says to replace the pump only if coolant is leaking from its weep hole, not to replace pump and housing together unless both are photographed leaking, and always to fit a new seal.2 VW official
An Audi bulletin for the later EA888 Evo2 (TSB 19 21 18) gives 10 Nm for the five pump-to-housing bolts. It is a related engine, not the MK7 unit, so treat the figure as a guide.38 Unverified
Part numbers
The parts bundle sold for this repair is 06L121111 (suffix M, N or P), 06L121012 (suffix A, H, K, L or M) and 06L121131. Which number is the pump and which the housing is not confirmed.3 Unverified
Warranty extension US only
VWoA warranty extension VWP-22-06 covers the coolant pump for 8 years or 80,000 miles, following the Zhao v. VWGoA settlement. Whether the Golf R is included is not confirmed.39 Unverified
PCV valve and oil separator
- Symptoms
- Rough idle, a whistle from the engine, engine warning light and oil consumption.4
- Cause
- The diaphragm in the valve tears.4
- Fix
- Replace the separator. 06K103495BM supersedes AA, AG, AT and P.5
One owners' club suggests replacing the PCV valve first when the engine burns oil (blue smoke), before any work that means taking the head off.15 Unverified
Rear main seal
An oil leak at the joint between engine and gearbox is often the rear main seal, and a failed PCV valve is a frequent cause. The latest seal is 06K103171G, with a reversed lip.6 Unverified
Carbon build-up on intake valves
US engines with direct injection only build up carbon on the intake valves at about 40,000-60,000 miles; the usual fix is walnut blasting. European engines have both port (MPI) and direct injection.7 Unverified
That every UK Golf R has MPI is not confirmed: the WLTP-era DNUE engine reportedly dropped it.7 Unverified
IS38 turbo wastegate (Golf R)
- Symptoms
- Fault codes P2563 (symptom 14846) and P00AF.8
- Models
- Golf R 2015-19.8
- Fix
- Apply penetrating spray to the linkage, run the ODIS basic setting, and grease the clevis with G 052 112 A3. If that fails, replace the turbo.8
- Bulletin
- VWoA TSB 21-25-01 (2077251/2, Oct 2025). VW official8
A rattle on cold start or when lifting off is a separate problem: play in the wastegate flap spindle. Aftermarket repair kits are sold for it.9
Warranty extension US only
VWP-25-16 pays 50% of a turbo replacement for wastegate rod corrosion, up to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles.40
Timing chain
VW sets no replacement interval for the chain.10 VWoA Tech Tip 15-20-01 (2058888/1) covers DJJA and DLRA engines: after chain work, the chain elongation value must be reset in ODIS.10 VW official
One tuning specialist advises replacement when the phase angle is beyond -4 degrees.11 The tensioner 06K109467K is reported as superseded by 06K109467IT, and whether the Gen3 tensioner is failure-prone is not confirmed.11 Unverified
Oil consumption
VW's limit is 0.5 litres per 1,000 km. Consumption below that is not treated as a fault. The procedure is in VWoA TSB 17-18-06 (2017813/24).12 VW official
Ignition coils and misfire
Coil part numbers listed by VW parts are 06H905110G and 06L905110K.13 VWoA also issued a misfire bulletin, TSB 01-16-13 (2033805), and a fuel additive bulletin, 00-17-13 (2033846).14
Other causes of misfire
- Plugs and coils
- One owners' club says they overheat and fail, usually beyond about 20,000 miles, and treats both as service items.15 Unverified
- Cam adjuster magnet
- A failing magnet causes a rough idle and a misfire that comes and goes. Its values can be watched live with VCDS or OBDeleven. Part 06L109259D.15 Unverified
- Sensors
- If plugs, coils and magnets have been replaced, the oil level or oil temperature sensor can cause the misfire and log an engine fault. Read the fault memory.15 Unverified
Haldex coupling (4MOTION)
- Symptoms
- Wheelspin, axle tramp, and an all-wheel-drive warning.16
- Cause
- The strainer in front of the pump clogs. VW's procedure is an oil change only.16
- Coupling
- MK7 4MOTION uses a fifth-generation Haldex with electric pump V181.24
- Fix
- Service the oil and clean the strainer. If the pump has failed, replace it. Run the pump learn after any work.16

DQ250 six-speed DSG (0D9)
On MQB the DQ250 is coded 0D9 (it was 02E before).24 Common signs of a mechatronic fault are a flashing gear display (PRNDS), limp mode and harsh shifts.18
| Bulletin | Scope | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service action 34H7 | MY2017, US | Gearbox noise. The whole DSG is replaced. The R unit is 0D9300014Q. | [19] |
| TCM software 37J2 | 2015, US | Gearbox control unit software update | [14] |
| Tech Tip 37-14-01 | US | DTC 01315 traced to the barrel connector | [14] |
The DQ250 fluid and filter interval is on the servicing page.
DQ381 seven-speed DSG (0GC)
The DQ381 replaced the DQ250 from 2017.25 Reported symptoms are judder, harsh shifts, limp mode, and codes P1735 and P1736.20
VW campaigns
US campaign 34K1 covered 2018 Golf R cars with the DJJA engine (310 in the US and 63 in Canada). It updated gearbox software for auxiliary pump V475 (DTC P0C29) and fitted kit 0GC398008D with seal 0GC927377. An optimised pump went into production from 1 Oct 2017.214344 VW official
Warranty extension US only
GTE hybrid DSG (DQ400E, 0DD)
Owners report the basic setting failing with "146 - disengaging clutch responding incorrect" and a locked gearbox at under 54,000 miles. One forum post says a specialist refuses these gearboxes and VW lists only a new unit, 0DD 300 040 C 001, at a quoted GBP 9,146.10.22 Unverified
A 2016 car with P0867 (low transmission fluid pressure, function restricted) was fixed with a new mechatronic unit. A VW technical product information (TPI) reportedly suggests replacing the gearbox; its number is not known.23 Unverified
The mechatronic is component-protected, so a used unit has to be matched online.23
DQ200 seven-speed dry DSG (0CW)
The DQ200 is fitted with the smaller engines (1.2 and 1.4 TSI, 1.6 TDI) and is coded 0CW on MQB.24
General failure modes reported for the gearbox family, not specific to the Golf 7, include sulphur build-up shorting wires and causing power loss (DQ200 and DQ250), noise, shift shock, failure to select even gears, and a cracked accumulator losing hydraulic pressure. The recalls in China, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia were for 2010-2011 production, the MK6 era.25 Unverified
No Golf 7 DQ200 recall appears in the DVSA or NHTSA data checked.4546
1.5 TSI evo cold hesitation
An uncited Wikipedia claim says the 1.5 TSI evo (DACA, DACB, DPBA, DPBE, DADA, DPCA) has low torque when cold, the "kangaroo" effect, caused by catalyst heating with a lean mixture and retarded spark, and that the later evo2 (DXDB, DNKA) fixed it with secondary air injection. No VW source confirms it, and a VW software fix is not confirmed.26 Unverified
Other range engines
EA211 cam belt
The EA211 petrol engines use a toothed belt for the camshafts, and the coolant pump is belt-driven off the exhaust cam.24 The UK replacement interval is not confirmed. Unverified
Diesel emissions (Dieselgate)
The EA189 engine at the centre of the emissions scandal is a MK6-era Euro 5 unit; 11 million vehicles were affected, 1.2 million in the UK.47 Golf 7 diesels are EA288.24 VW said Euro 6 models in Germany were not affected, while 2015 US models with the EA288 were.47 Unverified The US Golf TDI was sold in MK7 form for MY2015 only.48 Whether any European Golf 7 EA288 Euro 5 cars were in the EU fix campaign is not confirmed. Unverified
GTE high-voltage and 12 V faults
The GTE battery is nominally 345 V. VW says only qualified staff may work on the high-voltage system, and the on-board check that the system is de-energised never replaces the manual check with tester VAS 6558A.49
| Fault | What owners saw | Reported cause or result | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26638 High Voltage System Interlock P0A0A open circuit | "Hybrid system malfunction / unable to restart - do not open bonnet" (2017 GTE) | Cleared on an ignition cycle | [27] |
| 26645 High Voltage Service Disconnect | No start, "Error Hybrid System. Stop vehicle!" (2020 GTE) | Corroded interlock loop wire under the rear, 1-2 cm from the HV battery plug | [28] |
| 12 V battery not charging | Warning after remote pre-climatisation (2018 GTE); P0562, gateway P1B01 and U1406 | Unresolved, 12 V battery suspected | [50] |
The UK battery warranty for the e-Golf and GTE in the Feb 2017 list is 8 years or 99,360 miles (160,000 km), whichever comes first. Gradual capacity loss counts as a defect only if it exceeds the value specified for the car.51
Infotainment
Rear brake squeal
Rear squeal is usually treated with proper bedding-in and shims. The rear pads can only be changed with the electric parking brake in service mode; see servicing.31
DCC adaptive dampers
DCC dampers can weep oil or knock. A front DCC damper is 5Q0413031ED (also listed as FM).32 VWoA TSB 40-16-01 (2043146) explains how to judge whether a damper is really leaking.14
Water leaks
Boot
Owners trace wet boot floors to the rear light seals, the pressure-relief flaps and body grommets.33 Unverified VW Tech Tip 92-14-04 concerns the rear washer nozzle in the high-level brake light.14
Panoramic roof drains
VWoA TSB 60-18-03 (2045672/5) covers SportWagen and Alltrack panoramic roof drains that get pinched.34 The US schedule says to clean the drains every 20,000 miles or 2 years.34 US only
Windows and doors
Soundaktor
The sound actuator sits under the scuttle by the passenger-side wiper. It can buzz or log a fault. Owners switch it off with VCDS or unplug it.36
2019 US manual GTI stalling
2019 US manual GTI and Jetta GLI cars could stall at low speed with the clutch pressed. The cause was the intake cam advanced at idle with low oil pressure and oil at 110 C or more, and only engines built at Silao were affected. The fix was service action 24FD, an engine software update (Dec 2019), with warranty extended to 31 Dec 2025. NHTSA petition DP19003 was opened on 3 Sep 2019 and denied on 30 Jun 2020.37 US only
Of NHTSA complaints about 2019 GTIs, 185 mention stalling. Sunroof glass shattering and leaks are another recurring complaint, peaking on MY2017.53
Engine bay noises
From one owners' club, for the EA888 Gen3:15 Unverified
| Noise | Likely cause | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ticking or whine after switch-off | Normal: the cooling system, fuel pumps, injectors and valves shutting down. Only worth checking if loud or unusual | [15] |
| Hissing | A fuel or coolant leak. Inspect the lines and pumps | [15] |
| Grinding | A belt rubbing, the timing chain on older cars, or a worn alternator bearing, which the club calls very common. Replace or re-grease the bearing | [15] |
Exhaust drone
Most aftermarket systems have a single silencer and little back pressure, which causes drone in the cabin. It is worst in 6th gear at 50–70 mph and eases above 70 mph. Adding a silencer reduces it. One owners' club advises a sports catalyst rather than removing the catalyst.15 Unverified
Exhaust smoke
From one owners' club:15 Unverified
| Smoke | Likely cause | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| A little, any colour | Normal on the EA888 Gen3 (condensation), more so with no catalyst | Nothing | [15] |
| White, on acceleration when warm | Coolant burning: head gasket, warped head, cracked block, or radiator and hoses | Watch temperatures and coolant level; look for leaks | [15] |
| Blue | Oil burning: piston rings, valve stem seals, PCV valve or engine seals | Most causes need the head off. Try the PCV valve 06K103495BM first | [15] |
| Black | Too much fuel: the engine map, injectors, sticking intake valves, or rarely a fuel pump or line not holding pressure | Remove and flow-test the injectors; fit new injector seals on refitting, as they are single-use on this engine; log the engine data | [15] |
Soft brake pedal
- After bleeding
- The bleed order was wrong or air is left in the ABS unit. Re-bleed in the right order and bleed the ABS unit with a coding tool, as described under Bleeding the brakes.15 Unverified
- Any time
- Check the brake lines, bleed nipples and caliper seals for leaks.15 Unverified
A pedal that goes soft only on track, from fluid boiling, is covered under Track problems. Brake coding is on the Coding page.
Uneven tyre wear and unstable handling
- Uneven tyre wear
- First check the alignment against the maker's figures, then the pressures, set cold (see Tyres). Wear from track camber and toe settings is covered under Track problems.15 Unverified
- Unstable chassis
- Look at alignment, brake balance and aero first, then bushes, wheel balance or a bent shell. Track set-up changes (rear toe, pad compounds, aero) are covered under Track problems.15 Unverified
