Year-by-year changes

How to read this page

• UK first. Each year lists UK changes first, then US and other markets where they differ. Detail on each version lives on its own page: Golf R, GTI, GTE and e-Golf and the rest of the range.
• Dates are announcement or order dates unless marked as a build date. First deliveries often came months later.
• Model year is not build year. In Europe, model year 2016 started in calendar week 22 of 2015 and could be ordered from April 2015, according to a VW customer-service email quoted on a forum¹ Unverified. No other European changeover week was found. A car registered in 2015 can therefore be a 2016 model year car.
• The VIN tells you the model year. Position 10 is a model-year letter, not the build year. See Identification.
• US model years run ahead of the calendar: the US launch car of 2014 was MY2015²³.

2012

Pre-launch year; model year 2013 in Europe.

All versions (UK)

• 4 Sep 2012: world premiere in Berlin. Pre-sales began the next day in the first countries.⁴
• 27 Sep 2012: Paris show debut.⁵
• 3 Oct 2012: UK prices announced. Launch trims S, SE and GT; GTI and BlueMotion to follow in 2013.⁶
• UK launch engines: petrol 1.2 TSI 85 PS and 105 PS, 1.4 TSI 122 PS, 1.4 TSI ACT 140 PS; diesel 1.6 TDI 105 PS and 2.0 TDI 150 PS. Stop/Start and regeneration on all. 5- and 6-speed manual, 6- and 7-speed DSG.⁶

Hatch and Estate (UK)

• 7 Jan 2013: UK on sale, first deliveries.⁷
• Mar 2013: European Car of the Year 2013 and World Car of the Year 2013.¹⁰¹¹
• BlueMotion 1.6 TDI 110 PS (EA288), 85 g/km, 6-speed manual, lowered 15 mm, Cd 0.27. UK orders 1 May 2013, first deliveries August 2013.¹²
• Estate: UK orders 2 Jul 2013 in S, SE and GT. Engines 1.2 TSI 85/105, 1.4 TSI 122/140, 1.6 TDI 90/105, 2.0 TDI 150. Estate BlueMotion 1.6 TDI 110 before the end of 2013. Space-saver spare standard except on BlueMotion.¹³
• Nov 2013: fuse ratings on several SB and SC fuses change between cars "up to Oct 2013" and "from Nov 2013", pointing to an electrical revision.¹⁴ Unverified

GTI and GTD (UK)

• GTI shown at Geneva in March 2013: 220 PS, Performance 230 PS. UK on sale 4 Apr 2013, first deliveries June 2013.¹⁵
• GTI standard kit: bi-xenon with LED DRL, smoked LED tail lights, 18in Austin wheels, progressive steering. The Performance pack adds the VAQ front diff lock and 340 mm brakes.¹⁵ More on GTI.
• GTD introduced at Geneva in March 2013, UK orders 15 Apr 2013: 184 PS and 380 Nm, 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG, bi-xenon with LED DRL, 18in Nogaro wheels, Jacara Grey tartan.¹⁶

Golf R (UK)

• First details 20 Aug 2013, show premiere at the IAA in September 2013. UK orders 8 Nov 2013, first deliveries March 2014. 300 PS and 380 Nm, Haldex 5, optional DCC with the first "Race" mode, bi-xenon, 18in Cadiz wheels.¹⁷¹⁸ More on Golf R.

• 3 Jul 2014 UK list: the 1.4 TSI ACT is sold as 150 PS on the GT, and Composition Media 5.8in is standard from S.²⁵
• 3 Jul 2014: "Match" replaces SE at no extra cost, adding front and rear parking sensors, fogs, a mirror pack (power fold, puddle lights, kerb dip) and 16in Dover wheels. Engines 1.4 TSI 122, 1.6 TDI 105, 2.0 TDI 150. First deliveries September 2014. The MDI gains 30-pin and Lightning connectors.²⁶
• 2 Oct 2014: Alltrack premiere in Paris: 4MOTION with Haldex 5, 20 mm more ground clearance, Offroad profile, 1.8 TSI 180 PS (new to the Golf) and TDI 110/150/184.²⁷

• GTE: Geneva debut March 2014, UK debut April 2014; UK orders did not open until 14 Jan 2015.³⁰³¹³²

Golf R

• Apr 2014: Golf R 400 concept at Beijing, never built.³³

US (MY2015)

• The Golf is the first MQB car in the US: 1.8 TSI 170 hp (5-speed manual or 6-speed auto) and EA288 2.0 TDI 150 hp (6MT or 6-DSG), 2-door Launch Edition, 5.8in touchscreen (MIB1).²
• GTI on sale June 2014, built in Puebla.³
• e-Golf: SEL Premium only, 7.2 kW charger and DC fast charge standard, the first US VW with all-LED headlights.³⁴

• 15 Apr 2015: UK orders for the R Estate (6-speed DSG only), GTD Estate and Alltrack (TDI 110/150/184, 184 DSG only; no 1.8 TSI in the UK). First deliveries August 2015.³⁹⁴⁰
• Late May 2015 (build week 22): MY2016 brings MIB2 infotainment with MirrorLink and a larger Discover Media screen.¹ Unverified See Build-date changes.
• 24 Jun 2015: 1.0 TSI BlueMotion 115 PS, 200 Nm three-cylinder (EA211) in hatch, Estate and SV, 6MT or 7-DSG, lowered 15 mm. UK hatch only in Match trim, without ACC or Front Assist as standard. First deliveries September 2015.⁴¹
• 11 Nov 2015: Match Edition and Match BlueMotion Edition replace Match, adding Discover Navigation 6.5in with Car-Net Guide & Inform and a Winter Pack. Engines 1.0 TSI 115 BlueMotion, 1.4 TSI 125, 1.6 TDI 110, 2.0 TDI 150, all EU6. Deliveries January 2016.⁴²

US (MY2016)

• Sep 2015: the diesel emissions scandal. The MK7 US TDI was sold for MY2015 only.⁴⁶⁴⁷
• MIB II with USB and App-Connect (CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink) across Golf, SportWagen, Golf R and e-Golf. Rear camera standard on all SportWagen trims and the Golf S. Entry 2-door gets a 5in Composition Color, the S a 6.5in Composition Media.⁴⁸⁴⁹

Golf R (UK)

• 28 May 2020: UK Golf 8 1.0 TSI 110 PS entry model, as the MK8 range replaces the MK7.¹²²

2021

• US MY2021 is the last MK7 model year: Golf TSI single trim. US production ended at Puebla in January 2021.¹²³¹²⁴

Build-date changes for parts and retrofits

These change which parts fit and which retrofits work. Check the build date on the data sticker, not the registration date.

Infotainment (MIB2 from May 2015)

A VW customer-service email quoted on a forum says MY2016 started in week 22 of 2015 and brought MIB2 with MirrorLink and a larger Discover Media screen¹. Retrofitter listings split cars at 25.05.2015: MIB1 before, MIB2 App-Connect cars after¹²⁶. A parts-catalogue style note quoted on a forum reads "25.05.2015 to 02.11.2015, no licence from week 22", meaning the first MIB2 cars had no App-Connect licence¹²⁷. UK owners reported in January 2016 that dealers could retrofit App-Connect to MY2016 MIB2 cars, but not the first few weeks' build; cars from about September 2015 could be done¹²⁵. All of this is Unverified; there is no VW source for MIB2 hardware change dates.

UK screens: Composition Media 5.8in in 2014²⁶, Discover Navigation 6.5in by November 2015⁴², Composition Media 6.5in standard by May 2016⁵⁵, and at least 8in on every facelift car⁷⁴. A/C refrigerant (R1234yf from 2016)

A German forum dates the R1234yf fill to 31 May 2016 (week 22)⁵⁶ Unverified. The MAHLE catalogue lists R134a for 2012-16 and R1234yf from 2016¹²⁸. A UK Golf R 7.5 built September 2017 carries PR code KK3 (R1234yf; KK1 is R134a)¹³⁰¹³¹. In the US, MY2015-2017 is R134a and MY2018 on is R1234yf⁸⁹. Check the charge label on the lock carrier. Fuse tables and V475

A fuse-box aggregator shows ratings changing at builds from Nov 2013, Nov 2014, May 2017, Jul 2018 and Jul 2019¹⁴ Unverified. For DQ381 cars, the V475 auxiliary pump sits on SB33 (30 A) from May 2017 to June 2018, then on SB13 (30 A) from July 2018, with the mechatronic moving from SB13 to SB21¹⁴ Unverified. BCM coding

From around MY2018 many BCMs (address 09) show all-zero long coding, and changes are made in Adaptation instead⁹³ Unverified.

Colours

Names from the UK price lists only. The paint tables are images in the PDFs, so availability by trim and year was not captured.

Golf R colours and codes are on Golf R. The US MY2019 R offered 40 Spektrum custom colours¹⁰⁵.

Conflicts

• Golf R power in 2018. evo reports 300 PS for all Golf R from 5 Jul 2018⁹⁸. The UK list of 9 Jul 2018 still prints 310 PS, including 3-door and manual rows marked stock-only⁷⁸. • US facelift engine year. Wikipedia gives the 1.4T for MY2018¹¹⁶. VW US says MY2018 kept the 1.8T and the 1.4T arrived for MY2019⁸³¹⁰². Sources differ This page follows VW.
