Golf SV

The Golf SV, sold elsewhere as the Golf Sportsvan, is the tall third body of the Golf 7. It is mechanically a Golf under the skin, which is why most of this site applies to it, so this page covers what it is, what differs, and where to go for the rest.

What it is

VW's own words at the UK launch: the Golf SV is the third variant of the seventh-generation Golf, alongside the hatchback and the Estate1. It sits on the same MQB platform, was built at Wolfsburg from 2014 to 2020 and replaced the Golf Plus. Unverified for the dates and the plant, which come from Wikipedia2. VW's framing of the facelifted car calls it a perfected all-rounder with an elevated seating position and a rear seating system with longitudinal adjustment3.

No GTI, GTD, R, GTE or e-Golf version of the SV appears in any VW UK SV line-up, from the 2014 launch range to the June 2016 brochure14.

What it shares, and what is its own

VW's technology list in the SV brochure is the Golf 7 list, down to the same rear axle rule by engine. Front suspension, wheel control, anti-roll bars and brakes are described in identical words to the Golf's4.

The twist beam or multilink choice is made by engine, as on the hatchRear axle geometry, and a different engine threshold for the twist beam[4]
Model-year changes announced together with the hatch and Estate, for example the 1.0 TSI BlueMotion 115 PS in June 2015 and the Match, GT and R-Line Edition trims in September 2019Equipment designed around the taller body, listed below[5] [6]
Recalls: UK recall R/2018/031, on a passenger airbag inflator weld for cars built 1 July to 15 November 2014, covers the Golf, the Estate and the SV[7]

Wheel part numbers cross over as well. The 18in Pretoria is listed for the Golf 7, Sportsvan and Golf 8 in the same 5G0 family used across the range, which is recorded on the wheels page8.

The rear axle threshold is not the Golf's. On the SV the twist beam carries the 1.0 TSI 115 PS, 1.2 TSI 85 PS and 1.6 TDI 110 PS, and the multilink axle carries the 1.4 TSI 125 PS, 1.4 TSI 150 PS and 2.0 TDI 150 PS. The Golf brochure's twist-beam list uses the 1.6 TDI at 90 and 115 PS instead, so check the exact engine before ordering rear suspension parts49.

UK launch, trims and prices

UK order books opened on 7 May 2014 from GBP 18,875 on the road, with first deliveries expected on 22 July 2014. The trims mirror the hatchback: S, SE and GT, plus a BlueMotion on S specification1.

Engines

At launch the petrols were the 1.2 TSI at 85 and 110 PS and the 1.4 TSI at 125 and 150 PS, and the diesels the 1.6 TDI at 90 and 110 PS and the 2.0 TDI 150 PS. Everything except the 1.2 TSI 85 could be ordered with DSG1. By the June 2016 brochure the line-up was the 1.2 TSI 85 (S, 5-speed manual only), 1.0 TSI 115 (SE BlueMotion, 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG), 1.4 TSI 125 (S, SE), 1.4 TSI 150 (GT), 1.6 TDI 110 (S, SE and a separate BlueMotion) and 2.0 TDI 150 (SE, GT)4.

The facelifted SV went on sale in the UK on 7 December 2017 with 8in screens, an LED headlight option, the radar moved behind the badge, Front Assist standard, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist and the 1.5 TSI EVO at 130 and 150 PS10.

Towing

SV braked trailer limits are below the Estate's across the board: 1,100 kg for the 1.2 TSI 85, 1,000 kg for the 1.0 TSI 115, 1,400 kg for the 1.4 TSI 125 and 1,500 kg for the 1.4 TSI 150. The towbar limit is 80 kg and maximum roof load 75 kg, as on every Golf4. Estate figures are on the Estate page.

Dimensions, sliding bench and boot

MeasureFigureSource
Length4,338 mm: 134 mm longer than the Golf Plus it replaced, 83 mm longer than the Golf hatch and 224 mm shorter than the Golf Estate[1]
Wheelbase2,685 mm, 48 mm longer than the Golf's[1]
Width1,807 mm as VW measures it here, including mirrors, 81 mm wider[1]
Height1,578 mm, 126 mm higher than the Golf, excluding roof rails[1]
Rear bench40:20:40 split, sliding fore and aft by up to 180 mm[1]
Boot500 litres with the bench fully back, 590 litres with it slid forward, 1,520 litres folded[1]
Load length2,484 mm with the optional folding front passenger backrest, which VW's brochure rounds to 2.48 metres[1] [4]

The sliding bench is the SV's defining mechanical difference and has no equivalent in the hatch or the Estate1.

Do not re-use VW's comparison arithmetic across documents. The SV release works from an early Golf 7 figure of 4,255 mm length and 2,637 mm wheelbase, while the November 2018 UK brochure gives the hatch 4,258 to 4,276 mm and 2,620 to 2,630 mm. The deltas hold inside each document, not between them119.

SV equipment worth knowing

  • Drawers under the front seats, tables on the backs of the front seats, an additional 12 V socket and rear air vents in the front centre armrest, all on SE and above1.
  • Side Scan blind spot monitoring with exit assist was a Golf SV first1.
  • Roof rails are standard on every UK SV, black on S and SE and silver on GT, the same policy as the Estate1.
  • A space-saver spare is standard on all UK SVs except the BlueMotion, the same exception as the Estate1.
  • Representative weights from June 2016: 1.2 TSI 85 at 1,320 kg unladen and 1,840 kg gross, 110 mph, 0 to 62 mph in 13.2 s, 57.6 mpg, 114 g/km and ABI group 9E; 1.4 TSI 150 manual at 1,391 kg; 1.0 TSI 115 at 1,319 kg manual and 1,346 kg DSG4.

The SV has no sliding doors. A VW brochure cross-sell page mentions sliding rear doors, but in the context of the Touran, not the SV4.

What of this site applies to an SV

Because the electronics, engines and gearboxes are the Golf 7's, most of this site is usable on an SV without change. Treat the body, glass, seats and rear axle as SV-specific and look parts up by VIN.

Not yet found

  • The SV's VW type or chassis code. No primary VW document giving one was retrieved, so no code is published here. Confirm against ETKA before putting a type code on a listing.
  • Whether SV body electronics part numbers use the 5Q and 5G prefixes shared with the Golf or a distinct family. Unconfirmed against ETKA.
  • A labelled SV dimensions table. The brochure diagram carries unlabelled figures, so the values above come from the VW UK press release instead.
